Note 004

Life · Time & unfinished things

Not everything unfinished is a failure.

Some things were never meant to become what we imagined.

I used to think that finishing something was the clearest way to know whether it had been worth doing.

A plan needed a result.

An idea needed to become something real.

A journey needed a destination.

Otherwise, what was the point?

I'm not so sure anymore.

There are things we begin with absolute conviction, only to discover that we no longer want what we once wanted.

There are paths we follow for years before realizing they have taken us somewhere we never intended to go.

And there are things we leave unfinished, not because we stopped caring, but because something changed.

Sometimes it was the world around us.

Sometimes it was us.

We rarely talk about those things with much kindness.

We call them wasted time. Missed opportunities. Bad decisions. Failures.

And sometimes that's exactly what they were.

I don't want to pretend that every abandoned dream was secretly a success.

Some things really were lost.

Some opportunities won't return.

Some choices have consequences that cannot be undone.

But I wonder whether judging everything by its final result leaves out too much of the story.

What about the people we met along the way?

The things we discovered about ourselves?

The questions we learned to ask?

The moments that mattered even though they didn't lead anywhere in particular?

I don't have a neat answer.

And I don't particularly want one.

I still want to finish things. Build things. Make plans that actually become reality.

But perhaps I don't need every unfinished chapter to justify its existence.

Some things were part of the journey.

Maybe that's enough.

And maybe some of them aren't finished after all.

Maybe their meaning simply hasn't become clear yet.
